How to build a profitable subscriber list

When discussing MailOut with our clients, many people find the idea of ‘building up a profitable subscriber list’ quite overwhelming, particularly when we explain about a small thing called ‘permission based emarketing‘. So as a fully fledged ‘full service email marketing’ agency, we’ve penned our top 5 tips to get you started…

1. Ensure you have a subscribe button

Number 1 is a RULE, rather than a tip. Make sure that everyone who visits your website knows about your mailing list and can sign up easily. Make sure a sign-up form for your mailing list is visible on every page of your website and is quick and simple to use. This also helps to build familiarity with the idea of joining your mailing list. Make sure you include a sign-up form and a line or two about the benefits and what they should expect from the emails.

2. Always tell everyone about your newsletter

When you network, ask people you meet if you can sign them up for your newsletter. Usually at networking events people are there to sell, rather than be sold too. So rather than push your services, push your beautifully designed newsletter. It’s a great way for people to learn about your company on an informal basis.

Make sure you include a link encouraging people to sign up to your newsletter wherever possible for instance, your email footer, on the last slide of a presentation, on a customer quote, invoice or even on your business card.

3. Offer something in exchange

Relationship marketing refers to a short-term arrangement where both the buyer and seller have an interest in providing a more satisfying exchange. So if your powers of persuasion are starting to loose their charm or you need a little extra help to boost your subscriber list levels then consider developing an exchange relationship. Asking your audience to provide their email in exchange for ‘something’ is a great way to start building a positive experience with your customer. What you offer will ultimately depend on your product or service. Free reports are a great way to demonstrate your expertise in a topic and will ultimately build initial credibility with your audience.

4. Prizes

In our experience – everyone loves a freebie! Integrated your approach to data collection by utilising other media channels that you have. Making the most of your social media subscribers is a great way to start. Perhaps run a Facebook competition, create an online survey or sign-up for a voucher to redeem on their first purchase.

5. Word of mouth

Work your email marketing as hard as possible. Word of mouth and referrals are the most effective form of advertising. We always make sure that when designing an email for our clients to always include the “Forward to a Friend” link.

We all know subscribers could just “forward” the email, but adding in a special link for this has 2 benefits. Firstly it allows you to track the forward activity on your emails, and secondly it provides a valuable reminder to your subscriber that the newsletter can (and should) be shared with others.
